Huskies go 4-1; Miller named outstanding wrestler

Posted Monday, December 01, 2008 by Noblesville Ledger reporter Ted Schultz at (317) 444-5547.

The Hamilton Heights wrestlers went 4-1 Saturday to finish second in the Wawasee Duals.

The Huskies beat Columbia City 52-18 and Fort Wayne Dwenger 64-12, fell to Portage 35-30 and downed Wawasee 61-15 and Whitko 38-32.

"It was really good competition seeing Portage there," Heights coach Rick Willoughby said. "We had a couple kids that were winning and turned around and got pinned. If they just turn around and lose, we're OK, and if they win, we're in great shape, but the three points they picked up in both of those matches made the difference."

A.J. Miller was named the tournament's outstanding wrestler after going 5-0 at 145 pounds. Miller picked up 100th career win along the way.

Zach Bowers (140), Zac Garrity (189) and Jackson Kerfoot (275) also went 5-0 for the Huskies. Jarrid Logan (125), Brayden Alley (130), Colin Bullock (135), Tyler Shook (171) all went 4-1.

"We're disappointed we didn't go 5-0, but once again, I'm pleased with the way we wrestled," Willoughby said. "I think we showed improvement from last week. I think we wrestled well, and I think we're getting better and I think there's still room for improvement. If we keep improving at the rate we did from last week to this week, I think we'll be in great shape come sectional time, but we can't go backwards at any time. We have to keep going forward."
